Wada Tells Court: Declare Me Governor Elect

Governor Idris Wada of Kogi state will know his fate on Tuesday, December 1, as the federal high court fixed the date to hear a suit seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare him winner of the inconclusive gubernatorial election that was held in the state on November 21.

The case is being tabled before Justice Gabriel Kolawole and as at the moment it is still unclear if the case will go ahead as the defendants in the case were yet to file any process as at today, November 30.

NEC, the Attorney General of the Federation and the All Progressive Congress are listed as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants.

The governor argued that since the death of the candidate of the APC candidate, Abubakar Audu, INEC ought to have declared him winner of the election, which the electoral body declared inconclusive.

Wada based his argument on the premise that he was the only surviving candidate with the majority of lawful votes cast.

He is also seeking the court to order INEC to issue him with Certificate of Return.

The governor and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party is also praying the court to stop the apex electoral body from conducting the December 5th supplementary election.

Wada further prayed the court to restrain the APC from organizing or holding a fresh primary election for the purpose of any supplementary or other election in the state.

In a related development, Wada had allegedly told INEC that votes cast for the late Audu had become invalid immediately the deceased gave up the ghost.
